Join us for a unique Tea Ceremony presentation! It’s a great chance to meet, enjoy a delicious potluck dinner, and learn something new from our speaker.

Presentation Description:
Wa Kei Sei Jaku (harmony, respect, purity and tranquility) are the four principles of Chanoyu as given to us by tea master, Sen no Rikyu (1522-1591). While tea events vary in their formality, Rikyu’s philosophy still remains with us 450 years after it was formulated. The history of tea goes back thousands of years in China before tea was brought to Japan by Buddhist monks returning from study
in China. Tea use began as a means for Buddhist monks to remain alert while praying for many hours. Its use spread to the highranking nobility to be used as a medicinal drink. As tea became more available and tea began to be grown from seeds in Japan, its use spread to the wealthy merchant class and the samurai. Today’s presentation will weave the history of Japan with the history of tea. I will then present the important aspects of the tea ceremony to include values /precepts, important tea masters, the tea room. At the finish, I will demonstrate a well-known thin tea procedure.

It’s not a requirement, but we will appreciate it if you can bring a dish or sweets to share.
The presentation will be in English.
