Our next Nihongo Night is scheduled on February 22, 2020 from 5 pm to 7 pm ET.
The topic is “The Era of Showa – Part 1”. Mr. Mas Hongoh of JSGH will talk about Japan in the Meiji, Taisho eras to the beginning of the Showa era.
“As a child growing in Japan, I used to hear “Meiji Era is long gone…” That was after the Pacific War ended. Now Japan is living in the Reiwa era, following the Heisei era, and the Showa era seems long gone. We don’t know where the Reiwa era will lead Japan. Recently the Japanese economy is attracting much attention in Europe, they will be facing the same problem Japan has now, an aging society and reduced productivity. I’m not a historian, but interested in learning from history. Certainly, the Showa era was a very dramatic period, both for Japan and for the world around. So, I’d like to think with you what we may learn by connecting the dots of events in the history of Japan, from Meiji, Taisho, and Showa.”

テーマは「昭和の次代（１）」明治大正から昭和の幕開けまで

「子供のころ「明治は遠くなりにけり」という言葉をよく聞いたものです。今や年号も「昭和」、「平成」に続いて「令和」と改まり、まさに「昭和は遠くなりにけり」という感があります。振り返ってみると、「昭和」という時代は日本ばかりではなく、世界的にも大変な激動の時代でした。近年、日本経済の行方がヨーロッパで特に注目を集めています。少子高齢化による生産性の低下は、まさにヨーロッパがこれから直面する問題です。私は歴史学者ではありませんが、歴史に学ぶことはおそらく無駄ではないと思っています。日本と日本を取り巻く世界で「昭和」という時代に何が起こったのか、それらの出来事の点と点をつなぐことによって我々が歴史から学ぶものは何か、皆さんと一緒に考えてみたいと思います。」
