JSGH Newsletter – Feb 2021

Hello JSGH Members and Friends,

I hope this message finds you all well despite the recent snow and cold.  This New Year 2021, just like 2020, promises to be a year of firsts.  But unlike last year, where most of us had our first Zoom call, went to the store wearing a mask for the first time, or had our first holiday away from family, the new experiences of 2021 should be much more positive: our first COVID vaccine shot, our first time reuniting with friends in person, or perhaps your first long trip in a post-COVID world.

JSGH is also starting off 2021 with a few firsts.  Last month, we released our first New Years Greetings video, to help us mark the start of a new year.  Right now, we are in the process of sending out commemorative gifts for the first time to all 2021 JSGH members, so be sure to check your mailbox (or renew your membership).   And this month, we’re planning to have our first online movie night on Zoom, which we very much hope that you can join.  While these things are not as auspicious as some of the firsts that we’ll have as the world recovers from the pandemic, we’re very much looking forward to them, and of course the first time when we can all meet again.

Movie Night: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind – February 20th, 7pm

Join us for a screening of Hayao Miyazaki’s seminal early film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (風の谷のナウシカ, 1984), streaming live on Zoom.  The film is perhaps Miyazaki’s most definitive work, and established many themes that run throughout the rest of his films: the futility of conflict, the perils of environmental degradation, and the resilience of hope even in the worst of times.  Watch your email or the JSGH Facebook page for details.
